    Do you compost your food?

If you don’t know about compost, it is organic matter that has been decomposed in a process called composting. This process recycles various natural materials otherwise regarded as waste products and produces a soil conditioner. Compost is rich in nutrients.

Here are five benefits of composting:

    • Adds nutrients to the soil. Compost is humus—nutrient-rich soil.
    • Introduces valuable organisms to the soil. Microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, decompose organic material.
    • Recycles kitchen and yard waste.
    • Reduces landfill waste.
    • Good for the environment!

What do you think about composting? Would you try it? I have thought about trying it, but I also don’t garden much, and I know that is what people use it for sometimes. Here are some other uses for compost:

    • Use as mulch.
    • Compost-as-mulch is a fantastic way to boost your garden’s harvest.
    • Make DIY potting soil.
    • Brew compost tea.
    • Feed fall perennials.
    • Feed spring bulbs.
    • Spread on new or established lawns.
    • Top dress garden beds.
    • Add to fruit trees.
