  • Using donor DNA to ensure the health of your baby

Kristelle and Evan were excited to be starting a new family as they welcomed Noah into the world. But after a few days, Noah began to struggle with eating and soon became lethargic. Doctors assured them that everything was fine. As weeks went by Noah’s health rapidly declined. After a month in the hospital, the Shulmans learned that their son had a rare mitochondrial disease.

While dealing with their son’s death, doctors informed them that having another baby would be a game of chance since mitochondrial dna is transferee from the mother. Then they were introduced to the idea of Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy (MRT) which involves a donors mitochondrial. Congress stands in the way of the Food and Drug Administration from even accepting application for such a procedure.

Would you ever consider a procedure like this to ensure your child is free from a life with a chronic illness? Do you think a procedure like this is immoral or unethical? Would you be okay with the fact that your child would have three parents? Do you think it’s a good idea for your child to possibly have a relationship with the donor?
