Have you tried to do talk therapy with a psychiatrist? Has it been helpful for you?
I have attempted talk therapy before but never found that it was very helpful for me. Perhaps I didn’t try it for long enough or the therapist wasn’t a good fit. It can be hard to find and build a connection with a psychiatrist. I do, however, have a psy…[Read more] -
Leah Leilani started the topic Wheelchairs and Comfort in the forum Adults With Muscular Dystrophy 1 day, 8 hours ago
Do you think of your wheelchair as being comfortable or not?
I don’t associate comfort with my wheelchair and never have. Although, it isn’t particularly uncomfortable, I can’t wait to get out of my chair after being in it for several hours.-
I think it is pretty comfortable, but then my friend offered me a pillow to put behind my head, and I was like, “Wow, now this is comfort!” But I guess it depends on the activity that I am doing and the comfort I need. If I get too comfortable, I might fall asleep. My friends that have sat in my wheelchair seemed surprised by its comfort as well.

“I can be whomever I want and make my character’s body do what it wants because Duchenne muscular dystrophy doesn’t exist in the world of D&D. I try my best to let my friends know that they can tell me anything without judgement and that I will always be there for them. I have several friends who have come out over the years and their families and other friends haven’t always been the most accepting. When they come over to my house or talk to me on the phone I can tell that they feel…[Read more]

I haven’t needed to replace my walker in a while so I don’t know what kinds are on the market these days. Are one that are all-terrain and suitable for outdoorsy purposes? I used to have one of those tennis ball walkers when I was diagnosed and although it was nice and light, it definitely wasn’t sturdy or durable. The one I have now I don’t use a…[Read more]

I have it pretty good too although, yes, ableism is a constant battle. A cure is certainly more appealing for those with disabilities in less fortunate circumstances. I do however think it’s rude to call someone with a chronic illness and/or disability lucky or entitled. No matter how privileged we may seem, there are invisible battles we have to…[Read more]

Thankfully, it happened when I wasn’t around. my mom was using the van and was standing in front of the ramp as the other vehicle approached. According to her, the driver was an older woman who should’ve been able to see my mom and our car. She just ran it over and kept driving as if nothing happened.

I never really thought of it that way. Thanks for pointing that out. Also, school would be much more helpful and interesting if kids were taught about more current day societal issues. Not that disability and racial discrimination are just current day and don’t have a horrible history. I mean more so how to solve these issues and combat them.

Yes, I have tried to talk therapy, and thankfully, it was helpful. The downside was that it took a long time to find someone that was right for me. I guess all therapists aren’t alike, and you have to go through a few before you find one that works for you. that doesn’t mean that they tell you what you want to hear, but instead, they give you…[Read more]
