Day 7 of 30 Days of MD Topic: Beauty Standards and Disability This is @brianamills’ story: Hi, my name is Briana Mills and I’m 28 years old. I’d love to talk about disability and beauty standards. All my life, I’ve never felt truly beautiful. People like me were never represented in the media, magazines, or commercials. When able-bodies people thought of attractiveness or beauty, they never thought of disabled people. It took me a very long time to finally accept who I was and what I looked like. When it came to dating, I was so naive and self conscious. Men only saw me as a girl who was sick or could be taken advantage of. Someone to be pitied or was not worth being in a romantic relationship. I struggled with my self esteem, but I can tell you that all disabled people are gorgeous! Yes, we may look different than the average person, but that’s what makes us so attractive. I want to tell you that it’s totally okay to accept yourself, scars and all! I want to pave the way for disabled people in the beauty industry and the media. #MDAwarenessMonth #MDAwareness #30DaysofMD
