I’d love to talk about disability and beauty standards. All my life, I’ve never felt truly beautiful. People like me were never represented in the media, magazines, or commercials. When able-bodies people thought of attractiveness or beauty, they never thought of disabled people. It took me a very long time to finally accept who I was and what I looked like. When it came to dating, I was so naive and self conscious. Men only saw me as a girl who was sick or could be taken advantage of. Someone to be pitied or was not worth being in a romantic relationship. I struggled with my self esteem, but I can tell you that all disabled people are gorgeous! Yes, we may look different than the average person, but that’s what makes us so attractive. I want to tell you that it’s totally okay to accept yourself, scars and all!
