Inclusion with able-bodied peers
Research confirms that students with disabilities benefit from being included in the same school settings as their non-disabled peers and that segregated programs fail to demonstrate greater effectiveness (Lipsky, 1997; Buckley, 2000; and Sailor, 2002).
When you were in school, and if you were physically affected by your MD at the time, were you included in activities with children without physical disabilities? Do you think you benefited from being included with able-bodied peers? Did any teacher or your parents come speak to your school about your muscular dystrophy? Did you go through school without a diagnoses? Did the physical education teacher ever try to modify class to include you in the daily activities?
