The Spoon Theory
The Spoon Theory is a common way people with disabilities explain their energy levels to people without disabilities. The theory suggests that people with disabilities are allotted a certain amount of energy, or spoons, each day. While “healthy” people often have unlimited spoons to use throughout the day. This was first explained to me by a former boss who is in end stage heart failure and is on her 4th implanted device. I was having a hard day dealing with my FSHD and she said “you’ve used all of your spoons for today, go home.”
When was the first time you heard about the Spoon Theory? Have you seen #Spoonie? What other ways have you explained your disability to people? Do you find deciding when to strategically use your spoons throughout the day to be complicated and annoying? Have you shared any stories of frustrations about living with a disability?
