Open to the Public but Not Accessible
The community that I live in has pools and gyms that are not accessible but I pay home owner association fees for both. I was told that private communities that are not open to the public without member invite do not have to be ADA compliant in North Carolina. Nor do private facilities open to the public where it would be deemed too costly to upgrade to ADA standards. It took me 3 years, with the help from neighbors and the mayor of our town, we were able to get a pool lift and push button door opener.
Have you ever been to an event or facility that was open to the public but was not accessible? How did you feel? Do you think private facilities should be held to the same ADA standards as public facilities?
