Young Muscular Dystrophy Patient Inspires College Basketball Team


Seven-year-old Ashlyn Barrett joined up with the Maryland college basketball team a couple of years ago as part of Project Impact, a program that pairs sports programs and children with serious illnesses. Ashlyn has muscular dystrophy.

According to a report on, the players have since formed a strong friendship with Ashlyn. She regularly attends both practice sessions and games, and is considered a member of the team.

The players look at Ashlyn and what she’s achieved despite fighting muscular dystrophy and see her as an inspiration. When Ashlyn cannot attend games, players wear warm-up T-shirts emblazoned with “Ashlyn’s Army” in her honor. Find out more about this story here.
