Day 2 of 30 Days of MD Topic: Being a Teenager This is Kimberly Mullis’ story: Hey fam, I’m Kimmy!! (The one in the middle:) I have SMA II, and am truly living my best teenage life. For me, being a teenager looks a just little different than for someone without SMA. I know I said I like to live life just like everyone else, but parts of my life just need to be lived differently. Growing up, I used to be insecure about the those little different things. Things like: being the last one to finish my meal, snap chatting at awkward angles, and having to be in bed whenever my caretaker puts me there, and those are just a few. However, this past year I’ve come to know that I’M truly the one that cares the most about these things. My friends are good ones, and they could care less about the double chins I send them on snap chat. Another thing that can be hard as a teenager with SMA is balancing out my care. Normally, I have PCAs (Personal Care Attendant) around the clock to help out with my daily tasks. But as my friends get older and start to drive, I am able to go off without a PCA and be just like any other 16-year-old. Though this I’ve had to learn that my care isn’t a burden. This is something I’ve struggled with almost my whole life-until now. Learning to let me friends love me for who I am and love me well is so important. Being confident in who I am and KNOWING that I am loved is really what has me living my best life. We are all hand crafted individuals created with a purpose and worthy of love. Disabled or not, life will be what you make of it- and if you ask me, I’ve straight up fallen in love. #MDAwarenessMonth #MDAwareness #30DaysofMD
