The month of August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness month (SMA). SMA is a hereditary, degenerative, neuromuscular disease that is categorized as a type of Muscular Dystrophy. There are four different types of SMA all differing in onset and muscle atrophy progression. One in fifty people in the United States are said to be carrying the gene the causes SMA but they are unaware of it.

Recently, there has been a revolutionary drug called Spinraza that has helped many people living with SMA. It helps to stop or slow down the progression of the disease, giving people a longer life expectancy.
