Going places without your mom and dad is a big part of growing and becoming more independent. Independence is a crucial stepping stone in a teenagers life but it is also valuable for those with disabilities.

Two months into my relationship with my boyfriend, my mom decided it was time for home to learn how to drive the wheelchair accessible van. She showed him the ropes of how to drive the car with me in it: no sharp turns or sudden stops. It was a big moment in our relationship and gesture that showed my mom’s trust in my boyfriend.

Have your parents taught your friends, relatives or partner how to drive your wheelchair accessible van? Do your parents give you opportunities to be independent? Do they trust your partner or friends to take care of you?
