When I tell my doctors or other people that I’m not particularly close to that I have a boyfriend, they always act surprised. I’ve been asked by a friend of my mother’s if my parents join me and my boyfriend on dates.

People don’t expect me to be capable of having a typical romantic relationship. At times it makes me feel discriminated against.

Have you experienced odd reactions when telling people your in a romantic relationship? How do these reactions make you feel? Do you attempt to use the situations to educate people that people with disabilities are capable of having romantic relationships? Have people mistaken your partner for a nurse or paid caregiver?  Have these interactions had any affect on your partner or your relationship with your partner?
