May is Mental Health Awareness Month so today I’d like to open up a discussion about self-talk.

I think we all struggle to be gentle and kind to ourselves. Some more than others. I tend to set high and sometimes unrealistic standards for myself. If those standards aren’t met, I can be very hard on myself to the point where anxiety and stress set in.

But what is self-talk like when you have a disabled body? Do you make an effort to thank your body every day, not just when it serves you the way you want it to? Do you blame yourself for your body’s limitations when it “betrays” you?

I have done both and am always working to improve my relationship with my body but I am nowhere near perfection. I can, however, say that I have a better relationship with myself than ever before.
