The Not-So-Smooth Transition From Childhood to Adulthood With a Disability
Was it a difficult transition from being a child with a disability to an adult with a disability? Were you raised on how to approach adulthood as someone with a disability or were you never sure you would reach adulthood and always had someone else caring and advocating for you?
I have found that children with disabilities often have easier access to care, funding, medical equipment, and things to enrich their life. The moment you turn 18, all those life-altering privileges disappear.
All of a sudden you have to fight for your right to healthcare. Taking care of ourselves is a full-time job meanwhile we aren’t able to hold down an actual job but still have to pay our medical bills.
How do you navigate adulthood as a disabled person?
