Dealing With Cracked or Damaged Sidewalks
I was leaving a friend’s house downtown and heading to my van. As I approached my van, I looked up and opened my ramp door, but before I knew it, I had hit a large crack/hole in the sidewalk and was thrown from my wheelchair, breaking my joystick and seatbelt (from the force I hit the crack). I landed on my knees, then elbows, but blocked my face from hitting the pavement.
My friends came to my rescue, got me in my chair in my van, and snapped pictures of the damaged sidewalk. I have been in contact with the city government, and they have spoken to their insurance company attempting to gather information from the construction company that damaged the sidewalks. We have also talked to lawyers and are trying to figure out who can help us pay for the damage to my chair from the broken sidewalk.
Have you been in situations like this with cracked or damaged sidewalks? How do you manage?
