Choosing Between Working and Having SSI Benefits
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This month, we recognize disabled Americans in the workforce as well as those unable to work.
SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income. Social Security administers this program. They pay monthly benefits to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or aged 65 or older. SSI allows their clients to have under $2,000 in resources and this policy hasn’t changed since 1989.
As you know, I work here at MD News to moderate the forums. I also resell thrift clothing online.
Monitoring the amount of money I make is frustrating at times and I sometimes feel torn between the American mindset of earning a living or remaining on SSI benefits.
It brings me joy to earn my own money and have jobs that I’m passionate about. It gives me a purpose.
Do you work and have SSI at the same time?
