Dani, hope you have read my column, ‘Disabled’ vs. ‘Having a Disability’: Debating the Power of Words. I haven’t seen Queer Eye and will try to look it up but there is no doubt that people with disabilities are resilient and as I’ve written about in other columns, the best at creative living. I don’t think the general population realizes that.

I looked up this hashtag on Twitter and that’s very cool.   I haven’t done anything like this but I may have to think about dressing up my cane.  I hope this becomes a bigger movement!

I’d love MD podcasts. On February 10 I’ll be driving alone from Chicago to S. California and hoping to do some listening as I drive.

I don’t think the House would pass anything like this so we don’t have to worry. But of course it’s crazy. Just because I have a disability it doesn’t mean I can’t go to a baseball game like I did last night. And even though I might choose to post great pictures that look like it was an amazing evening, because public venues are often so poor with accessibility, the reality is that it wasn’t easy. My next column will look at accessibility issues.

I worked as a licensed clinical therapist for parts of 30 years. Good to see the work Sarah is doing!

Leah, I had a situation that was in some ways the opposite of you. My pulse was down to 33 bpm. What happened is that I was getting PVCs every other beat so these pre-ventricular contractions could not be picked up and even though my pulse was 66, machines and even professionals would only feel 33 beats. I always talk about being proactive and ultimately the solution that I came up with was a medicine I was taking and once I stopped it the PVCs went away. Even though I had seen a couple of cardiologist, the solution came from me and without that I might have ended up with very big medical procedures that were not needed.

I do a lot of similar. Definitely get a chem profile and lipid profile which looks at a bunch of things. I’ve asked doctors to add things like A1C, vitamin D level, testosterone level and Utica acid level. I’d like to ask For a co Q 10 level.

It is very hard for me to get out of the movie theater seating or seats for plays or anything like that. The new movie theaters with the bigger reclining seats are better for me so at this point I only go to theaters with those seats. I am still looking at buying a wheelchair just for specific venues and events.

I recently had a bone scan which showed that my bones are strong and I have always taken supplements like vitamin D and calcium. In fact, my last vitamin D level was 80. But the clinical trial I am in, which is the reason I had the bone scan, can cause osteoporosis. I am taking prednisone so I need to be careful. I will go back in another four months and have another bone scan.

I would love suggestions from people. I am looking for a light, folding electric chair. I’ve seen some that look good for $1000-2000 online. Thoughts from readers?

For me right now is making sure we can find a place with higher seats. It’s kind of a pain and eventually once I buy a wheelchair I may use that more in certain situations.

I’ve been lucky. 45 states plus DC and Puerto Rico. Also about a dozen countries and in March will add Netherlands and my dream of Van Gogh Museum. I wrote a column recently about my first real wheelchair use for a football game and I may get a chair for my one day in Amsterdam. I love Prague. Being in the square is amazing and I could sit there all day and watch the people. Many European cities can be hilly or have cobblestone streets and side walks and many older buildings have step ins etc so you have to plan.

I use a local Walgreens and then just drive through and pick up. I get 90 day supplies so that’s easy!

In my columns I have talked about the necessity or variety in seating. No, a restaurant should not offer just one wheelchair friendly table. And remember, a wheelchair friendly table does not make the restaurant friendly for all with disabilities. They need to have high tables and low tables and chairs with arms and without arms. And the ability at any table to easily accommodate a group that might include wheelchair users. It should be automatic when an establishment gets licensed to serve the public.

I haven’t been to a movie in many months since I hurt my shoulder. Most regular seating is useless. The bottom of the seats start to pop up as I turn to get my left shoulder on to lift. At this point I’m probably ready to try the newer recliner seat theaters. Or use a wheelchair. Read my next column due out 12/5. It’s about my first wheelchair use ever back in October for a football game. I’ll probably look to buy a chair soon to keep in my car.

Dani, I agree. I know I have shirts that I have been wearing for 15 years or more and I could almost live out my life buying very little. And I have a little doubt that all of this could have an affect on the environment. So many of us live oversold, meaning we are spending much more than we need to. But I know some people really enjoy shopping for clothing and we all have our hobbies and interest. But I will save my money for travel!

For me, it’s definitely too hard to try stuff on at a store. And I really rarely buy clothes anymore. I pretty much have what I need for ever 🙂 my annual gym shoe buy I order from home. Easy.

There is definitely a need for elevator improvement and some I have seen are downright dangerous. There needs to be a button or something to let it know the person will need a little more time. Also when doors start to close they MUST have a good working sensor to reopen if someone is in the way. This is a big issue.

Dani and Leah, I love Cuban sandwiches too. You can ad hoc it and make it with ham and turkey that’s leftover. 🙂 You are making me hungry!

This is great. I have a lot of hope for CRISPR in the future and we will only get better and better at it as scientists perfect it.
